Spyware comes in two forms: the annoying and the dangerous. The annoying types are easier to detect because they want to be seen. The dangerous types, the ones that collet information such as passwords, social security numbers, home and business addresses, and credit card information, are more difficult to detect because their main goal is to hide where they can't be seen.
Watch for unusual activity on your computer.
If suddenly the computer is running low on memory or running slower than usual, there may be spyware on the computer.
Some spyware on a computer will cause the screen to flicker. This is common when a spyware program is taking snapshots of computer screens; the spyware is collecting information on what Web sites you are visiting, and this temorarily draws energy from the computer, thereby causing the flicker.
Unexplained pop-ups or a large number of pop-ups when a window is closed can mean spyware on a computer. Pornography sites use this method a lot; you close one window and ten more open. This is particularly dangerous if children are using the infected computer.
Signs that a computer has been or is being used when no one is actually physically at the computer can mean you have spyware.
Unexplained error messages can be another indication that there is spyware on a computer.
Losing control of your computer. This can be anything from homepages being changed without you knowing it to your security programs, such as firewalls or anti-virus programs, being disabled (turned off). The spyware programs do this so they can do what they want without the security programs detecting them.

All you need to do is visit: http://www.lavasoft.com and download Ad-Aware. It's an awesome anti spyware program for free.
Next, click the green "Download Ad-Aware Free" button.
Then click the green "Download" button the LEFT. IGNORE what's on the right side of the screen! It sounds funny but since its red some people's eyes are drawn to the right and they can't follow my directions.
Next, click the "Download" Link. Then "Save" to disk.
Then you open it to execute it and follow the setup wizard.
Finally, when its done setting up, you should actually have 2 icons on your desktop: Ad-Aware and Ad-Watch. Since you are running the free version of Ad-Aware, you don't have to do anything with Ad-Watch. If you never intend to pay for the upgraded version, you can delete the Ad-Watch icon. Just click on the Ad-Aware icon and set your desired settings. Good rule of thumb here is if you don't understand it, then leave it on the default settings. Some settings won't be available because this is the free version of Ad-Aware. This anti spyware program is the best in my opnion for catching spyware. Webroot Spysweeper is good too but i have seen Ad-Aware catch things Spysweeper didn't. Good Luck!

How to Remove Adware and Spyware
This article will give you the basic tips to removing adware and spyware for free
This is one of the easiest ways to speeding up your computer and your internet. First, download a free adware and spyware program that are readily available online. I suggest Lavasoft's Adaware because it is so reliable and easy to use.
Make sure that you update your definitions every time you scan your computer. This is done easily by clicking on the update tab when you run Adaware. The download should take no longer than a few minutes. Once downloaded, no further work is required. Just begin the scan to search for spyware.
Scan your computer at least once a week. Consider more if you use your internet everyday. Scanning can take a while, but can be performed in the background while you are using the web. Let it go and see what you can find.

How to eliminate spyware from your computer.
Spyware is any software that's actually running on your computer without your consent or knowledge. Spyware tracks what you're doing and reports data from your computer to a remote server, for example capturing keystrokes and trying to report E-mail addresses or credit card numbers.
Run your Anti-Spyware and Anti-virus to scan your computer for spyware and other unwanted software.
Review the files that are discovered and quarantine the unwanted spyware and software.
Follow the directions from your Anti-Virus and Spy sweeper to get rid of the unwanted pest.
Now to get rid of any remnants of the spyware. Once you are logged into Windows, click the Windows Start button, on the bottom left.
Select “All Programs” then “Accessories” then “System Tools” then “System Restore”.
System restore box You will now see the system restore box. Select “Restore My Computer to an Earlier time” and click next. Now you will see a calendar on the left.
Select a date before you started having this issue. For Example if you were infected a week ago, then go back two weeks, just to be safe.
Once you have a selected a date, click next and then, next again.
Your computer will now go through and un-install any software after that restore date. Keep in mind that, by doing this you will loose any programs you installed after the date you selected. None of your documents or pictures will be lost, during this process.
Just to be safe, we want to make sure that there are no more spyware hidden in the computer files, so, we are going to reboot the computer, in safe mode and run the Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus again.
